tts-1 and tts-1-hd shut down on 6 January 2027
OpenAI retires tts-1, tts-1-hd and gpt-4o-mini-tts on 6 January 2027. The replacement, gpt-realtime-2.1-mini, doesn’t work on /v1/audio/speech, the API’s text-to-speech endpoint: only on the Realtime API. It’s a migration, not a name change.

What changes in your code
- The replacement, gpt-realtime-2.1-mini, doesn’t work on
/v1/audio/speech: only on the Realtime API. It isn’t a name change: the part that makes the voice has to be rebuilt. - If you only turned text into audio files, plan for a realtime connection (WebSocket or WebRTC) instead of one HTTP request.

- Can I keep using /v1/audio/speech?
- With gpt-realtime-2.1-mini, no: its page says that endpoint isn’t supported. You have to move to the Realtime API.
- How much work is it?
- It depends on how you use the voice. One file per request becomes a realtime session: usually the biggest part of the migration.
